|Italy||CHURCH MUST BE FISHER OF MEN ON NET - ITALIAN BISHOPS|
Jesus showed the way. Now the Catholic Church must become a fisher of men on the Internet, the Italian Bishops' Conference said on Thursday.
"I don't know if Jesus had the Internet in mind when he told his doubting disciples to throw out their nets," spokesman Claudio Giuliodori said, referring to the New Testament episode on the Sea of Galilee where Jesus told his followers to cast their nets on the other side of the boat in order to find fish.
"But what is clear is that today, like then, it's all about not betraying his word, which invites us to go to men wherever they may be. There's no doubt that today many of them are on the electronic net," Giuliodori said in remarks released ahead of a meeting in Assisi about putting God's Word on the Web.
Giuliodori said the Internet contained "extraordinary possibilities" for the Church to continue the job of the apostles -- to go out into the world and preach the Gospel.
"Via Internet, you can get in touch, in real time, with every corner of the earth and potentially every person," he said.
