Sydney    CARDINAL SAYS SORRY TO 'STOLEN GENERATION'
Archbishop of Sydney Catholic Cardinal Edward Clancy yesterday did what Australian Prime Minister John Howard has failed to do when he said sorry to the Aboriginal "stolen generation".
Cardinal Clancy said at a Sunday liturgy attended by Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern that Australians had been misguided in the way they had treated indigenous people.
"Our efforts to assist indigenous Australians have often been misguided and have led to unintended but harmful long-term consequences," he said.
"For our faults and failings, for the hurt and scandal they have caused both to groups and individuals, we profess sincere and profound regret and ask for forgiveness," he said.
Ahern joined hundreds of Australians in a prayer for peace in Ireland at a mass at St Mary's Cathedral, as part of his eight-day visit to Australia.
The congregation was told that this year -- the 2000th anniversary of Jesus' birth -- is a special time for reconciliation.
