|Vatican||WAS ROMERO KILLED FOR HIS FAITH OR HIS POLITICS?|
Experts of the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints are currently assessing whether the former Archbishop of San Salvador was assassinated in 1980 out of hatred for the faith ("in odium fidei"), or for strictly political reasons.
If they decide he is a martyr, the beatification process will not require a miracle through the his intercession.
The Archbishop's cause has been under investigation in Rome since 1997.
Last Friday, the Catholic Church in El Salvador held a memorial service on the 20th anniversary of his assassination. The Mass in his memory was attended by Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles, 17 Bishops, dozens of priests and religious, and hundreds of faithful.
Meanwhile, the organisation We Are Church, recently issued a press release suggesting the Vatican itself was responsible for Romero's death. The statement said: "The Vatican's critical stance toward liberation theology is to a great extent responsible for the fact that Romero and many like him fell victim to Christian persecution from right-wing politicians in South America." misrepresentations.
To date, the Salvadorian justice system has not solved Archbishop Romero's murder.
