East Timor independence leaders Xanana Gusmao and Jose Ramos Horta have thanked the Church in the Philippines for support given during their struggle for independence.
Speaking to the Rome-based news agency Fides, Gusmao said: "We thank Cardinal Jaime Sin for all the support, as well as the support of the Philippine Catholic Church, which was given to us in our most difficult times."
Gusmao went on to say that the situation in East Timor "is at present very stable."
The two leaders were guests at a Thanksgiving and Solidarity Mass for East Timor sponsored by the Association of Major Religious Superiors of the Philippines (AMRSP), at the Sacred Heart Parish in Quezon City on 6 February.
Gusmao said: "Your struggle which you led in your peoples' revolution of 1986 was the spirit which inspired us and, most of all, the Filipino religious communities who helped us during the war for our liberation."
