|Media||TV MASS GOES DIGITAL|
'Mass For You At Home', the Ten Network's nationally televised Eucharist, is the first television program in Australia to go digital.
Telecast from Ten's Melbourne studios, this popular weekly Mass, that first went to air in August 1971, is the longest running program on Australian commercial television and a production of the Archdiocese of Melbourne.
Elaborate preparations were made in January to change the altar, lectern and background setting in the Channel 10 studio. As digital television pictures are considerably wider than current TV, the Mass 'set' was re-built to accommodate the new picture dimensions. Although it will be a year or so before the consumer begins to purchase digital TV sets in any quantity, stations are converting now in preparation for future demand.
Producers of the Mass believe the wider screen will eventually benefit the telecast as the extra width will be available for increased text information and enhanced signing services for the hearing impaired. The TV Mass is currently the only program on Australian television with Signing for the deaf community.
"Mass For You At Home" is telecast in most states at 6am on Sunday and delayed for telecast on many closed circuit TV systems in hospitals and nursing homes.
