Sri Lanka    BISHOP SAYS TAMIL REBELS 'INTERESTED IN PEACE'
One of Sri Lanka's leading Catholic Bishops has said he is convinced the rebel Tamil Tigers will take part in any peace initiative.
Bishop Rayappu Joseph of Mannar district told a local newspaper, Midweek Mirror, that a group of religious leaders have been involved in communicating with both the Tigers and the government.
The Bishop of Mannar told the local media that religious leaders were working to bring the two sides together and to advise them.
He said that while he was in favour of mediation, religious leaders would not be directly involved in the process.
The Bishop said the religious leaders were trying to complete the initial facilitation and that the government would have to take over afterwards.
