Africa    ARCHBISHOP SAYS ANCESTORS NOT SUBSTITUTES FOR SAINTS
South Africa's Archbishop Buti Tlhagale has questioned the suggestion by some African Catholics that Christian saints are the same as ancestors in African cultures.
"Traditionally, Africans did not have a highly developed concept of a Supreme Being -- if he was believed to exist at all. Consequently, there was no connection between God and the ancestors," Archbishop Tlhagale said in an article in South Africa's Catholic weekly, The Southern Cross.
In both traditions, "the living hold a rendezvous with invisible persons to ask them for special favours," he said.
