Social Justice    CHAPLAINS APPEAL FOR EARLY RELEASE IN PRISON AMNESTY
NSW prison chaplains have issued an amnesty call for a 10% reduction in sentences for around 5000 NSW prisoners to mark year 2000 Jubilee celebrations, the Catholic Weekly reports.
The amnesty proposal, which will be put to the NSW Government, is an ecumenical initiative from 33 prison chaplains working across the State under co-ordinator Fr Harry Moore.
Fr Moore drew inspiration for the amnesty proposal from a similar call by New Zealand prison chaplains issued late last year. Prison chaplains will this week take copies of the amnesty on a petition to their parishes to seek community support.
Fr Moore said legislation removing the power of judges and corrective services to give remissions for good behaviour had for many prisoners removed the incentive for rehabilitation.
