Rights advocates and Catholic students here have protested the last week's shooting of civilians by police during a protest in a town in Papua (formerly Irian Jaya) province.
On Monday, Catholic students from Merauke district staged a peaceful rally on the grounds of the provincial House of Representatives to protest the shooting incident that killed a high school student and injured two others. All three victims sustained gunshot wounds.
The Institute of Human Rights Studies and Advocacy asked the police to bring to justice the perpetrators. It disputed a police explanation that the three victims were hit by rubber bullets and that 11 police were wounded. Merauke Catholic university students also issued a statement.
