Parish priests 'must make a greater effort to prepare couples for marriage' and have the courage to stop the person 'who has an idea of marriage that does not correspond to that of the Gospel and the Magisterium'.
This appeal was made by Bishop Domenico Mogavero, director of the Office of Juridical Problems of the Italian Episcopal Conference. The Bishop has just returned from visiting 19 ecclesiastical tribunals in the country.
According to Bishop Mogavero, given the great number of failed marriages, it is clear that "people are not aware of the step they are taking," and when they realize, "it is too late, and the marriage has already broken. Because of this, parish priests must make the effort to evaluate every couple."
