Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Vatican Secretary of State, has said that former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet should be allowed to return to his country for humanitarian reasons.
Cardinal Sodano, who met with outgoing Chilean President Eduardo Frei, leader of the Christian Democratic Party, after his meeting with the Pope, said in a public statement to an Italian news agency that Pinochet's arrest is a source of concern both for the Chilean government and the Vatican.
Pinochet has been under house arrest for 16 months in the UK, awaiting a conclusion to the legal debate over the attempt to have him tried in Spain for torture carried out during the time he was President of Chile.
